A Postcard from Turkana

A young Turkana woman in everyday attire

Dear Friends,

I don’t know how they survive. But survive they do. At least 250,000 Turkana people subsist in an arid region of Northern Kenya where temperatures regularly hover above 100 degrees. It only rains two or three times a year. Then, for just a few days, Turkana’s dry river beds flow with water…only to soon dry up again.

I’ve been sweltering here in Turkana for the past four days.

Primitive and poor, the Turkana live in thatched huts with sand floors. Many walk miles each day to fetch water and firewood. Their economy is built primarily upon the goats that graze their sparse land, and from which they derive meat, milk and clothing. They also barter their livestock for other things, such as the plastic beads that adorn the elaborate necklaces worn by their women.

Although they are materially poor, many of the Turkana people have become spiritually rich because of their receptivity to the gospel. Visiting one of their church gatherings under the shade of a large tree is like attending an old Southern revival, with clapping, dancing, and enthusiastic Amens. Their a cappella hymns are sung in beautiful harmonies. It is heavenly.

When it comes to offering relief or development to the Turkana Christians, Heaven’s Family would prefer to provide the latter, to help them lift themselves. Unfortunately, no one, including myself, has found a way to do that. The Turkana have very few resources and little that anyone wants. They live in a barren wasteland. They hardly have enough water to survive. So it seems all we can do, at least for now, is bring them relief in the form of food, especially during the current drought.

On my first visit to Turkana in January of this year, I promised the believers in remote villages that I visited that if they would allow me to take their photos, I would show their beautiful faces to my friends and ask them for money so I could return to Turkana with corn to distribute. They took me up on my offer, and over the past four days, with the help of Kenyan minister friends, I’ve personally overseen the distribution of almost four tons of dried corn. Each day we’ve traveled by Land Rover to remote locations where Turkana believers gather in the shade of large trees along dried up river beds. They sing and dance for joy upon our arrival.

As we’ve visited them, I’ve been making them the same offer again. I’ve told them if they would allow me to take portraits of some of the women with the most colorful necklaces, I would show those portraits to my friends and ask them to help me return again with more corn (and beans). They readily agreed, and it occurred to me that perhaps this scheme could be a tiny stab at development, as they do have something to offer that can “earn” them money. So if you are interested in this small scale attempt at some compassionate capitalism, I’ve got a deal for you.

Here it is: If you will contribute before the end of June to Heaven’s Family’s Food Fund, I’ll email you ten, full-size portraits of some beautifully-necklaced Turkana women, children, and maybe even an ostrich-feather plumed Turkana chief. In full-size (enough to fill your computer screen), they are absolutely stunning (and of National Geographic quality in my most humble opinion). Using them as screen savers might lead to interesting conversations with others….

As always, none of your contributions to the Food Fund are used for administration. 100% is sent overseas to bring food relief. Administrative costs are paid from our General Fund.

All you need to do is click here to make your credit card donation of any size to the Food Fund. Or you can send a check to the address below. When I return from Africa in the middle of this month, I’ll send your ten Turkana portraits to the same email address that we sent this email to unless you tell us otherwise.

If you click on any of these photos, a larger-size version will be displayed in your browser window. Make sure your browser window is opened as large as possible….

One last thought: I may use a small percentage of what you contribute to buy some of the Turkana men picks and shovels—tools that are almost unknown among them—and encourage them to dig some reservoirs to catch water when rain does fall on their land. That would be an effort at some real development. We’ll see what happens.

Thanks, as always, for your time and compassion,

David

P.S. Forwarding this to your compassionate friends could result in less hunger and more food for Turkana believers. Thanks so much.

Some Folks Who Love You

Dear Friend,

Thank you so much for giving to the Food Fund. Here are a couple stories—written in fairly good English by one of our national missionaries, Khamh Lian Thang—of how your gifts have benefitted very poor believers in the nation of Myanmar. Their photos and short stories below will touch your heart, I’m sure. On their behalf, thanks for your compassion!

The people in this first photo are U Pho Wi and his family. They are a Karen Christian. There are five member in his family and they struggle a lot this year. Since they are new to the community, they were afraid to ask their neighbor for any Christian who would share them food for a couple of days. I arrived there in the right time when
there is no single seed of rice remain in their barn. A full bag of rice we gave them will help them survive at least a month….It will be an unforgettable Christmas for them

The woman in this second photo is a widow, Daw Mary Nu and her son. Her husband died last year. He was a wood cutter and the tree he cuts fell on him and he dies on the spot. She goes home to homes and ask if someone would give her a work and give her some food in return. But unfortunately she was sick for a week and she and her little son ate only one meal a day for a week. When I arrived there, she was not recover yet from her illness. She could barely stand for a photo shoot. Hopefully she will recover soon and the food that we gave her will keep her strong enough to continue her daily routine.

The people in this third photos are Malar Win and her three students. She is a missionary and she trains teens for discipleship program. They run out of food to celebrate Christmas and the food that we gave them will do a very happy momentum Christmas.

The woman and the girl in this fourth photo are Won Khan Daung and her disable daughter. The daily income she has almost goes for her daughter’s medication every day. They have never had a full bag of rice in their life time, she told us. This year’s winter seems to be colder than any, and she said, she now could save the money which she would have spent for food and buy a new blanket for her and her daughter. What a warm winter night they will spend together!

The people in this fifth photo are Eris and her brother and sisters. Their parents died two years ago. They were Roman Catholic before. But when their parents died, they ask their Bishop and Priests for a proper burial and their Priests said that they were busy for Christmas preparation and they wont be able to do a funeral. But a Protestant Pastor, who is a friend of mine did everything for their parents’ funeral and since that day, my friend is using their home for a house meetings to convert Catholics. They are the first family whom I met and speak a pure British English.

This correspondence is not intended to be an appeal for funds, but as an informational update for those who have already contributed to the Food Fund (FF). Our goal is to serve you as you serve “the least of these” among Jesus’ family. If, however, you would like to contribute again to this fund, we want to make it easy for you, either through credit card or automatic bank withdrawal. You can do either by clicking here. 100% of all contributions to the FF are sent overseas to hungry believers and for unbelievers who are listening to the gospel in developing nations.

Rony Cuba eating a full meal at the feeding center in Lima

In September, we told you about the children’s feeding centers in Peru that are regularly supported through Heaven’s Family’s Food Fund. This month we’d like to tell you a story that should make you feel good, since you are a part of it due to your gifts to the Food Fund.

Evangeline Cuba has been a widow for two years, and she and her three children were a family without hope. Evangeline’s job as a school janitor brings in about $2 a day, which enables her and her three children to barely survive in the poverty-stricken community where they live. They are not only financially poor, but they were emotionally broken as well. But that was before they met Nelly. Nelly is not only the director of the feeding center that we assist in Lima, but she was the last person to see Evangeline’s husband alive.

Two years ago, Evangeline’s husband was a bread delivery man, and he supplied bread for our feeding center in Lima. One day, after delivering his bread and having a short conversation with Nelly, he walked out to the street to get on to his bicycle rickshaw. He was hit by a speeding vehicle and instantly died.

A year after his death, Evangeline and her children found comfort and compassion in the same place where they had lost a provider, husband and father. Like so many of the families in the area, the Cuba family is so poor that the lunches served three times a week at the feeding center are the largest and most nutritious meal they receive.

The free meals are what led Evangeline to begin bringing her children to the feeding center, but what kept them there was the love of Jesus. The Cuba family found that the feeding Center was not only a place that they could eat well, but it was also a place where they could be loved by Jesus in the Christian staff who work there. After ten months, their lives are completely different. The children and their mother spend much of their time there with friends, and they now attend church services whenever they are held by the administrating pastor. Evangeline has been so touched with the work of the feeding center that she now volunteers to help whenever she has a day off or vacation time.

While in Peru we were able to visit the feeding center and meet Evangeline and her children. Evangeline stood up among her friends, and with tears in her eyes thanked us by saying:

We thank you so much for your help. I know that the Lord loves us because he has sent you to provide for us.

Thanks again for making this miracle possible.

Myanmar Rice Stories

Dear Friends,

I want to share some very recent testimonies I have received from Khamh, our very good friend in Myanmar. The Heaven’s Family Food Fund is making a great difference in the lives of poor believers there. Even though I had to postpone my December 2009 trip to Myanmar in order to take care of some pressing ministry issues in Kenya, I still arranged for an emergency food distribution of $1,000 USD there. So far, Khamh has been able to help twenty-five poor families with large bags of rice. The testimonies below each photo are Khamh’s own words. Thank you for helping us to make a difference!

Myanmar boy with rice

The young man in the first photo is from “_______” village of Inle Lake area. He came to faith in Christ through our Youth retreat program this month. He was too happy when we gave him a bag of rice, and as he ran to his home with a bag of rice, he fell off from the tiny bamboo bridge with his rice. He could not give me a smile as I took his picture because his rice bag fell deep below 15ft and he and his family have to eat wet rice that for a day. Wet rice or soaked rice smell very bad.

myanmar man in boat with rice

The man whose photo is taken on the boat is from “_______” village. He is a national missionary in Inle lake area. His father cast him out from home on the day he became a Christian. He does not have a home, and his earning can’t just support renting a house. That’s the reason I took his photo on a boat. He stays with believers for a month in one family and then moves to another. He will be sharing his rice with several families.

girl with rice

The young lady in the photo is from “_______” village. She is a high School student in Nyaung Shwe town, a seven miles journey from her home. She doesn’t have an engine on her boat, so she has to row with a hand paddle fourteen miles each day. She is a real hard working lady who also is very active in church youth activities. Sadly, her parents are not Christians yet.

myanmar woman with rice

The woman in the photo is from “_______” village of Inle Lake. She also is a new believer who came to her faith in our Lord Jesus last year, and she has never missed any conference or training or seminar from the day she became Christian. She works as a day worker in a paddy field and gets 500 kyats a day, which is equivalent to 50 cents of a US Dollar. The Lord’s prayer “give us today our daily bread” may not be necessary in the United States, but in the lives of these people, the prayer is so necessary. They do need our intensive care in their journey to a mature Christian life. Please remember them in your prayers.

Grateful Mothers

Dear Friends,

Because you have contributed to Heaven’s Family’s Food Fund in the past year, I wanted to let you know how your compassion is making a difference around the world. This report comes from Peru, where each month we support several children’s feeding centers that are administrated by trusted pastors who are winning families to the Lord. When we were in Peru earlier this year, we visited those feeding centers, and we also brought with us Food Fund money to purchase provisions to give to the families of the children who come to the feeding centers three times each week for a hot lunch.

At one of those feeding centers, we walked into a crowd of mothers with beaming faces. They were so glad to see us, and wanted to personally express their appreciation for the meals that we provide each week made possible by your generosity. One by one, they expressed their thanks, which I want to pass on to you, since you have made their blessings possible. Some were very emotional and teary-eyed as they spoke.

Juana Soto arrived at the feeding center with her children like every other Tuesday. She was overjoyed to see that Heaven’s Family had prepared two weeks worth of food provisions for her and her family. She said, “We are so surprised and blessed by this gift that you have brought us. You have no idea how much we need this. We are very poor and this food will make a big difference for our families.”

Juana Soto

We repeatedly heard stories of how hard the women work each day in the fields and the brick pits, and how they appreciated the way we provide meals for their children three times each week.

The woman above on the left is the mother of a young boy named Juan. She was quite emotional as she thanked us, saying, “My son loves this place he talks about it all the time. Thank you so much for coming into our lives and for all you do.”

Most importantly, the children who come to the feeding centers three times each week are learning about Jesus. Their mothers are also getting a taste of the love and grace of God, thanks to your compassion. Thanks so much.
