Dear Friends,

I wanted to bring you up-to-date regarding how the contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) are continuing to meet pressing needs in the Irrawaddy Delta of Myanmar.

We just received a report from natinoal missionary, Peter Cung, whom David mentioned in our June DRF mini-update. Peter has been providing food and housing in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis while bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to hungry hearts. Below are just a few of the photos Peter has sent that show new Christian families with their new houses—built for only $130 with your contributions—and the makeshift shelters in which they previously lived. In the past month, we’ve funded the building of nine new homes for Christian families.

This first sequence shows a house being constructed from material delivery to completion.

U San Aung and Uh Uh, happy in front of their new home. Note the ”lake” their house had to be built on.

Here is another ”shelter-to-house” sequence:

Mother Oo Ma (on left in the left-hand photo), cannot stand properly and is blind in one eye. Peter wrote to us, “They are so very grateful to God for His provision.”

Below is widow Tawng Kyi’s previous tarp shelter and brand new house:

Tawng Kyi was Buddhist. Today, she’s in love with Jesus. Heaven’s Family will also be providing her with a small business grant from our Widows Fund to help her become self-sufficient.

I couldn’t resist including this final photo of Li Li and Zun Par in front of their new home. Prior to your help, they and their parents had no home at all.

On behalf of these and others like them, thank you so much.

In Christ,

Emily Growden

North Korean Rescue

Dear Friends,

In my last North Korea mini-update, I told you about Mrs. Kim, a believer who escaped from North Korea and who lives in China, but who smuggles food into North Korea for starving Christians. She was caught several months ago feeding starving family members and was put into a prison camp.

A border patrol guard who will shoot at any who dare try to escape from North Korea

For the last six months our partner’s underground network has been working tirelessly to discover where Mrs. Kim is being held. Their persistence paid off, and to our relief, she was found to be alive, but suffering severe malnourishment and sickness from months of living in horrific prison conditions Heaven’s Family sent funds to help our partners provide medical help for Mrs. Kim by means of bribing starving prison guards.

Our partners recently received an email from one of their other smugglers. He said that he had discovered that with a little monetary intervention he could immediately secure the release of Mrs. Kim from prison. As you read this, that smuggler is in the process of rescuing Mrs. Kim and taking her safely back to her two sons in China.

Thank you so much for giving to the North Korean Christians Fund. Your gifts have helped secure the rescue of Mrs. Kim.

Chuck training how to use biosand water filters
Two amigos working together to bring pure water to the poor in Peru with biosand water filters

Dear Friends,

Arcadio Apestugui Florentino, pictured above, attended training in Lima, Peru earlier this month, on how to manufacture biosand water filters. To be with us, he traveled most of an entire day by bus from his home city of Nuevo-Chimbote, where he oversees several churches. Arcadio loves the Lord and His church and has a great sense of humor. He was keenly interested in our biosand training, and he was always willing to do whatever was needed to help us manufacture our pilot filters. As he was learning very quickly, it became obvious to me that he would be an excellent person to develop another biosand water filter manufacturing project in his own city. So I granted him $1,100 from our Safe Water Fund to get started under the watchful eye of Ruben Cano, our biosand water filter team leader in Lima.

With our grant, Arcadio will be able to manufacture 20 filters. He will then find 20 families who will each purchase 1 of the biosand water filters, agreeing to make 10, $5 monthly payments. Arcadio will follow up and collect the payments while making sure each family is correctly using their biosand water filters. After just 13 months, Arcadio will be able to manufacture 60 more filters from their payments. This process will enable Arcadio to continue making these safe biosand filters indefinitely. This is the vision that we have for all of our biosand teams, of which we currently have nine, in Kenya, India, Rwanda and Peru.

Plastic Biosand Water Filters

Purified water from the biosand water filters
Notice the difference after the water filters through the biosand process!

Above is the first of the plastic biosand water filters we built in Peru. Notice how dirty the water is going in and how clean the water is coming out! Biosand water filters are a cost-efficient and practical way to make unsafe water safe to drink!

I was able to have our Lima team build three of these biosand filters during our three-day training, and we installed two of the three filters in people’s homes while I was there. Ideally, I need about five days to train teams thoroughly in hygiene, sanitation, and biosand technology, but our time was limited. Praise God for people whom God has given us around the world like Arcadio, who is now our second biosand water filter team leader in Peru. I will be traveling to the Peruvian jungle city of Iquitos in January to train a third biosand team. Both Africa and India are on my schedule for the Fall to train additional teams.

Thanks to you, we are able to continue to provide this simple, effective technology to those who are suffering from unsafe water. And while we do so, we provide these teams with a vital ministry to the poor that will continue indefinitely without further financial investment from us! God bless you as you continue to love and serve His people around the world!

Helping North Korean Christians

Dear Friends,

I wanted to share with you some important news of how Heaven’s Family is helping to save a life in North Korea. The report below comes to us from our partners in North Korean ministry, Alpha Relief. We’ve just sent $500 to help meet the need described in the report. Be blessed as you read, knowing that you have been used to be an answer to many prayers.

Mrs. Kim, one of our smugglers working from inside China, is currently imprisoned in North Korea for feeding starving family members and sharing the Gospel. For the last six months our underground network has been working tirelessly to discover where she is being held. Mrs. Kim knew the risks involved in bringing Christ to her loved ones in North Korea. Now, since she has been captured, she has not only risked her own life, but the lives of her two sons as well. As you can see, the punishment is severe for Christians. The boys are safe in China for the time being, but at this point, they face an impossible decision. If they
keep their Chinese citizenship they forsake any possibility of returning to North Korea to look for their mother. However, in reclaiming their birth citizenship they risk imprisonment or even death in an attempt to rescue her.

An answer to our prayers came last week when one of our contacts located Mrs. Kim in a prison not far from his underground smuggling route. To our relief, she was found to be alive, but suffering severe malnourishment and sickness from months of surviving under horrific prison conditions.

Our smuggler immediately made his way back into China to let her boys know of her condition as well as give us the details for her needs. We have a very small window of time to ensure that the lives of the Kim family are rescued from possible death or long-term imprisonment.

Here is our plan:

The North Korean prison officials and guards are impoverished. Our smuggler can provide them gifts of food and money in exchange for access to Mrs. Kim. Through these gifts, we can get medicine to her as well as prepare our underground network for her eventual release and removal from the country. In order to make these preparations, $1,300 is needed. Additionally, we also have an opportunity to provide her sons with visas to protect their citizenship in China and prevent deportation back into North Korea where they would be treated as criminals. The visas cost $1,250 each and would ensure their safety.

Again, we have helped to meet this need by sending $500 to Alpha Relief.

As the new director of Heaven’s Family’s North Korean Christians Fund, I hope to keep you informed periodically via email of what your contributions are accomplishing, as the NKC Fund is only highlighted in our monthly magazine about twice a year. We are, however, helping Christians in North Korea continually because of your compassion.

On behalf of the Kim family, thanks so much.

Marcos Receives His Sight

Dear Friends,

When I was in the Dominican Republic last month, a pressing medical need of an elderly Christian man was brought to my attention. $400 could save him from going totally blind. I could not resist meeting that need with funds from the Critical Medical Needs Fund. Recently I received a good report from our primary representative in the Dominican Republic regarding the result of our help. Since you had a part in making it happen, I thought you would enjoy reading the brief report below:

His name is Marcos Almonte Nuñez. This neighbor of ours was practically starving next door to us. His home was in a really bad shape and his sight was practically gone. We began to help him in December of 2008 by fixing his roof. Then we painted his home and fixed his back door which was rotted and windows in the back which were in the same condition.

One of our elders, Aneudy Casilla, took Marcos to the eye doctor and the need was urgent. He had a growth that was affecting his sight in the left eye and it irritated him to such an extent that he would call to me crying, asking me to do something. But his problem required precise laser surgery. I was able to get it done for only $75.

The other eye, however, had lost complete light color recognition, which means that he was legally blind in that eye. The cataract had completely covered his eye and the physician said that the surgery must be done as soon as possible so as to save his vision. Thanks to your offering the surgery was a total success this past Tuesday. and I have here on my desk the actual cataract that looks like a small cornflake which had covered his eye. It measured 6.0 millimeters in diameter.

Marcos is so grateful that he can share this new eyesight with all of us and now he is getting a new chance to learn how to read the Word.

Marcos Almonte Nuñez, happy to regain his sight

On Marcos’ behalf, thanks so much for making his miracle possible.

Sincerely in Christ,

David Servant

Rice for Disaster Victims

Dear Friends,

I wanted to post a quick update about how the Disaster Relief Fund is bringing relief to survivors of Myanmar’s Cyclone Nargis who are still suffering in the aftermath many months later.

Nargis not only destroyed houses and crops, but it also destroyed rice fields that were flooded with salt water. Many people have migrated from the delta area to the outskirts of Myanmar’s former capital in order to survive by any means possible. One of our national missionaries, Peter Cung, has been sharing the gospel among the makeshift huts where displaced people are living, and he has found receptive hearts, winning quite a few to the Lord.

Peter recently distributed 100- and 50-pound bags of rice, provided by Heaven’s Family, to many new believers. Below are photos of a few. Although their living conditions are almost unimaginable to us (and especially now as the rainy season begins), they are rejoicing for the food that the Lord has supplied. We are also helping to fund the building of as many houses as we can for members of our spiritual family through gifts to the Disaster Relief Fund. Thanks so much for making this ministry possible.

Christian's receive rice

I did not recognize this woman and her little child standing behind a 100-pound bag of rice, and I asked Peter about her. I learned that we had previously provided the $120 house that she is living in and featured it in our May magazine. You may recognize her from the next photo that we published in May, taken on a sunnier day:

Peter said that the rice he gave to them would provide for them for two months.

This is U Kyi Win. He is a new believer. His wife and son, who also survived Cyclone Nargis, remained in the delta region while he came to Yangon to try to earn money to feed them. But he hasn’t found any work. He was extremely happy for the gift of rice.

This is U Aung Kyaw. He is also a new believer. As a Buddhist, he did not live a very exemplary life and divorced his wife, abandoning her and their son. But since becoming a believer, his life has been changed. From what he earns in Yangon, he sends most to his ex-wife and son to support them.

Daw Sing Soe is 85 years old and is also a new Christian from a Buddhist background. She lives alone, earning very little by cleaning homes and washing clothing. She was very happy to receive a gift of 50 pounds of rice at her tiny home.

Moe Moe is a new believer, married, and with a son. Two months ago her husband left her to go look for work elsewhere. She has not heard from him since. They are barely surviving, and were very thankful for 50 pounds of rice.

Over a year ago, Ni La’s husband also abandoned her and her daughter. But after converting from Buddhism to Jesus, Peter said Ni La has great peace. She was thrilled to receive 50 pounds of rice. Like everyone in these photos, she is sitting in front of her house.

Now Seh and her husband Min Lu, along with their daughter, live in the little tent/shack behind them. They are also new believers and were overjoyed to receive enough rice to last for a month.

On behalf of these and others like them, thanks for caring.
